👣 足利 The City of Ashikaga

 
いったいなんだったんだろう。朝起きたらパンツがごわごわになっていた。
What in the world was that? When I woke up in the morning, I found my underpants stiff.

夜寝ている最中にどこかからかなにか液体が出て、パンツが濡れた。しかし、目覚めることはなく、濡れた下着はそのまま自然に乾いて、鑁阿寺の濠に落ちたときの長ズボンみたいにこわばった感じになった。
While sleeping at night, some liquid came out from somewhere and wet my underwear. However, I did not wake up, and afterwards my wet shorts dried naturally, and I felt stiff like the long pants I wore when I fell into the moat at Banna-ji Temple.

もし寝ている最中の粗相だったとしたら、経験があった。経験上、絶対目が覚めるとわかっていた。漏れ出た温かいものが辺り一帯にじんわり、じわーっと広がっていく。幼稚園の頃だったろうか、父親といっしょに寝ていた夜中の布団の中で、そうした独特の気持ちよさを味わったことがあった。
If it had been a rough night event while sleeping, I had experience. I knew from it that I would definitely wake up. The warmth that had leaked out spread slowly and gradually throughout the area. I had experienced this unique feeling when I was in bed with my father in the middle of the night, probably when I was a preschooler.

「寝小便小僧」
"Hi, bed-wetting boy!"

庭に干した布団から一家中に知れ渡り、すぐ上の兄からはそう言ってしばらくからかわれた。
The whole family knew about it from the futon my father hung out in the yard, and the elder brother teased me about it for a while.

でも、今回は、それとは違うのだ。気持ちよさの実感が残っていない。また、もらしたあと、ただちに目覚めることがなかった。なにか夢を見ていたのかもしれない。だれか夢に出てきたのかもしれない。しかし、覚えがない。
But this time, it was different. There was no real sense of feeling left. I did not wake up immediately after the leakage, either. Maybe I was dreaming something. Someone might have appeared in my dream. But I don't remember.

なんだか一大事件のような気がしたが、母親も父親も大騒ぎしなかった。パンツの替えを頼まれた母親も、新しいのをこちらに手渡しただけで何も言わなかった。いったいなんなのだろう。
It seemed like a big deal, but neither the mother nor the father made a fuss. The mother, who had asked for a change of pants, simply handed me a new pair and said nothing. What on earth was going on?

なんで何も言わないんだ? 知っていて言わないのだから、こっちから聞くのも気が引ける。
Why didn't they say anything? Since they know and they don't say anything, I feel uncomfortable asking them.

この疑問は何日も続いた。
This question went on for days. 

でも、いつのまにか忘れてしまった。
But before I knew it, I forgot about it.






 

今は昔、昌平町の鑁阿寺の隣にある、史跡足利学校の足利学校遺跡図書館は、新緑が目に眩しい5月から夏休みが終わるまで、前庭の空き地に野外緑陰図書館がまるで縁日の市のように開館した。ベンチのような椅子付きの大テーブルがいくつか並べられて、望むなら腰掛けて涼しく本を読むことができた。

The Ashikaga Gakko Ruins Library at the Ashikaga Gakko Historical Site, located next to Banna-ji Temple in Shohei-cho, is an outdoor green shade library that opens in a vacant lot in the front yard like a fairground market from May, when the fresh green is dazzling to the eyes, until the end of summer vacation. Several large tables with bench-like chairs were laid out, and if one wanted, one would sit down and read a book in the cool air.


我が家のある通り3丁目からは自転車で大通りを東に1丁目まで行き、伊勢町方向に折れて鑁阿寺方向に進むと10分ほどで着く。夏には本を借りたり勉強したりするためによく出かけた。一般に公開されているふつうの図書館だが、建物は古くからの和洋折衷の建物で、飾り窓の窓辺やシャンデリアの天井が洒落ている。

From 3rd Street, where our house is located, it takes about 10 minutes to get there by bicycle, riding east on the main street to 1st Street, then turning toward Ise-cho and going in the direction of Banna-ji Temple. In the summer, I often went there to borrow books and study school subjects. It is an ordinary library open to the public. The building is an old Japanese-Western style building with stylish decorative window sills and chandelier ceilings.


ある夏の、よく晴れたある日、自転車で一人で出かけた。屋内で書架を眺めるうちにあまり借りたい本も見つからなかったし、かといって勉強の用意もなかったので、野外のベンチでくつろぐことにした。

One fine summer day, I went out alone on my bicycle. As I browsed the shelves indoors, I didn't find many books I wanted to borrow, and I wasn't prepared to study, so I decided to relax on a bench in the open air.


葉の生い茂る樹木の陰の、どっしりしたテーブルとベンチの席につき、借りた地図帳を開いて眺めた。読書する人々の空間をそよ風がわたり、本のページには木漏れ日が差した。あまりの気持ちよさについウトウトとしてきた。

I took a seat at a sturdy table and bench in the shade of leafy trees, opened a borrowed map book, and looked at it. A gentle breeze blew through the space where people were reading, and the sun shone through the trees on the pages of the books. It was so pleasant that I found myself gradually falling asleep.


すると、晴子ちゃんの姿が現れた。
Then Haruko-chan appeared.


小柄な髪長姫は僕の前を歩いていた。
The petite, long-haired princess was walking in front of me.


追いついて手をとった。
I caught up with her and took her hand.


「しりとりしよう」と僕は言った。
"Let's play Shiritori," I said.


「いいよ、コロッケからね」
"Okay, You'll start, Croquette."


「コロッケ」
"korokke."


「消しゴム」
"Keshigomu."


「むかで」
"Mukade."


「でんわ」
"Denwa."


「わに」
"Wani."


「にんじん」
"Ninjin."


「負けだよ。んで終わってる」
"You lost. Ended with 'n'."


「あ、そーかー。じゃ、にんげん」
"Oh, I see. Well, then... ningen."


「おんなじようなもんじゃないか。でもだめ、負けたら相手が先行でやり直しだよ」
"That's almost the same. In case you lost, I will go ahead and start over."


晴子ちゃんは手を振りほどいた。
Haruko-chan waved her hand away.


「そーかー、じゃ、コロッケからだね」
"I see. Then, you start over."


「うん、いくよ」
"Yes, I will."


「どーなつ」
"Dounatsu."


「つくし」
"Tsukushi."


「しまうま」
"Shimauma."


「まんじゅー」
"Manju."


「じゅーか、じゅーす」
"Ended with ju? Then, juusu."


「す」
"Su."


「す？ す」
"You su? Then, su."


「だめだめ、くりかえしは✖」
"No. No. Repetition of the same word is not allowed."


「じゃ、すなば」
"Then, sunaba."


「オーケー」
"That's OK. "


前から車が1台来た。2人で前後に並んだ。
A car was approaching us from ahead; we lined up one behind the other, with Haruko-chan in front.


「ばんび」
"Banbi."


「びん」
"Bin."


「また、んか、まけだね」
"Again you said 'n'."


「そーかー」
"I admit."


車が去り、また横並びになった。
The car went away. We again went side-by-side. 


「んはだめだって言ってるだろ。僕の勝ち。ご破算で願いましては、とんかつ」
"I said 'n' is NG. I won.  All over again, tonkatsu."


「つき」
"Tsuki."


「きんぎょ」
"KIngyo."


「ぎょ？んー、ぎょうれつ」
"Gyo? hmmm, gyoretsu."


「つき」
"Tsuki."


「だめだめ、くりかえし。今度は私の勝ち、あっはははー」
"No, no! You repeated that. I've won this time. Ahahaha!"


「やられた、負けた」
"Defeated, I've lost."



夢なのによく続いた。緑色の甘い香りの空間のおかげだった。
Only a dream, but lasted long.  In the open sweet green air, I was extremely happy.

「願いましてぇは、5円なりぃ、98円なりぃ、105円なりぃ、369円なりぃ、引くことの23円なりぃ、足すことの110円なりぃ...」
"Now please make it: 5 yen narrie, 98 yen narrie, 105 yen narrie, 369 yen narrie, subtract 23 yen narrie, add 110 yen narrie..."


母と一緒に受付窓口に向かおうとしてドアを押し開いて中に入ったとたん、お兄さん先生のかけ声が耳に飛び込んできた。演算をしきるためのものであり、その人の足元に座卓上のそろばんに向かう生徒たちが部屋いっぱいにいて、若い先生のよく通る声を聞きながら一斉に珠を弾く。かけ声のほかは、カチャカチャカチャカチャというタマが木枠にぶつかる音が響くだけだった。

As soon as my mother and I pushed open the door to go to the reception desk, the young teacher's call  jumped into our ears from inside. There were a full of students in the adjacent room, who were sitting below the teacher to work on their tabletop abacuses. They were all playing the beads at once while listening to the young teacher's clear voice. The only sound other than the shouting was the clattering of the beads against the wooden frame.


「8円なりぃ、93円なりぃ、154円なりぃ、212円なりぃ、123円なりぃ、では」
"8 yen narrie, 93 yen narrie, 154 yen narrie, 212 yen narrie, 123 yen narrie, that's it!"


ぴたりと「では」で、珠の音が止まった。
With a crisp "that's it," the bead sound stopped.


「はい、大川くん」
"Okawa-kun, how much, please."


指名された生徒が「1280円なーりぃー」と答える。
The nominated student replies, "1,280 yen narrie."


「ご明算。次いきましょう。ご破算で願いましてぇは、....」
"Well done. Let's move on. Let's make ...."


連れられてやって来たのは井草町にある鑁阿寺の真ん前、濠の南側の川原井珠算学校だった。学校とは名ばかりで塾のようなものだったが、規模は比較的大きく、通う生徒も多かった。
I was taken to the Kawarai Abacus School facing the south side of the moat of Banna-ji Temple in Igusa-cho. The school was a cram school, which was relatively large and many students attended.


最初の印象は、こりゃだめ、長続きしないだった。
My first impression was, "This is no good for me, I'll quit soon."


母はこちらの気持ちにはお構いなしに入会手続きを進めた。習字でも絵でも嫌だと言ってすぐにやめた本人なのに、懲りない。

My mother proceeded with the admission procedure without regard to my feelings. Her son was a boy who cannot stick to accomplishments and had already quit both calligraphy and painting, but she never learned her lesson.


音楽のお稽古ごとは小学校入学当時の学級音楽隊がカスタネット担当だったこともあって、とっくにあきらめていたようだ。それでも、できなさそうなことを見つけるとこちらに稽古を押しつけた。お使いとか学校のプールが開放されたときの水泳とかも同じ延長線上でやらされた。母親なりになにか方針がある。

She had long given up on music lessons, as he was in charge ofcastanets for the class music band when he entered elementary school. Even so, when she found something he couldn't do, she forced him to practice it. She also made him run errands and swim when the school pool was open, as an extension of the same practice. The mothers had their own policies.


それでも、しぶしぶながら習字も絵も最初の3回くらいまでは行けた。しかし、どうしても続かない。いやなものはいやだ。近所でガキ大将として遊ぶほうがはるかにいい。知らないうちに時間が過ぎたことを装って、さぼってやめる。

Still, reluctantly, I was able to get through both of the first three lessons. However, I just couldn't continue. I don't like what I don't like. It would be much better to play as a kid general in the neighborhood. I would pretend that time had passed without my knowing it, and skip it and quit.


こうしたことは母親との闘いだった。習字が下手。絵が下手。お使いができればいい。水泳ができない。計算が苦手みたい。ということから、いろいろやらせる。こっちはそれでいいじゃないか、どこが悪い、なのでかみあわない。

These things are a struggle with my mother. Not a good calligrapher. Not good at drawing. Will be good at running errands. Can't swim. Not good at math. So, I am made to do many kinds of things. We are not getting along with each other because I say, "That's good enough, what's wrong with it?"


学校の先生の評価も似たようなもの。学校は勉強中心で案外話が楽。たいへんよくできました。よくできました。ふつう。もうすこしがんばりましょう。いろんなものにこうしたスタンプが最終的、決定的に押される。評価の波をかいくぐって、だれもが泳いでいく。

School teacher evaluations are similar. School is study-centered and easier to talk about than one might think. Very well done. Well done. Not so good. Let's work a little harder. These are the final and decisive stamps on many things. No one can help swimming through the waves of evaluation.


かけっこは近所でよくやっていたから案外好きだし、人並みの速さは出た。相撲が体育になかったのは残念だった。ドッジボールはふつう。逆上がりはもうすこしがんばりましょう。水泳はだめだめ。休みの日に公開された学校のプールに隣の家のかずえお姉さんが連れて行ってくれたが、沈没するのを見てあきれかえられた。

I liked running track better than I expected because I used to do it a lot in the neighborhood as fast as anyone. It was a pity that sumo wrestling was not a part of PE. Dodgeball is not so good. Let's work a little harder on my back hip circle or pullover. Swimming was no good. My neighbor's sister Kazue took me to the school pool, which was open to the public on holidays, but she was disappointed to see me sinking.


そろばんは使い方の説明がたいへん面白かった。まず手前から両手で持って斜めに傾け、すべての珠をおろして０の状態を作る。1は下の段の珠を1つだけ上に上げる。4つ上げて、さらにもう1つ足すときには、全部を下げ、代わりに上の段の1つしかない珠を上げる。10の位、100の位もこういう仕組みで同じように進める。素晴らしい計算機だった。が、それでも遊びのほうが勝った。

The explanation of how to use the abacus was very interesting. First, you hold it with both hands from the front and tilt it at an angle, then lower all the beads to make 0. For 1 you raise only one bead on the bottom row.  When all the 4 were up and  you must add one more, lower all the beads and raise only one bead on the top row instead. 10s and 100s proceed in the same way, using this mechanism. It was a great calculator, but still the fun won out.
